Several people have been killed and injured in a shooting in central Paris on Friday morning. Police and prosecutors have however calmed the situation and confirmed that the shooter, who is in his 60s, had been arrested.

The motives of the shooting is still unclear even though many claimed it was a terrorist attack.

“The shooter has been arrested with his weapon. The danger is over,” a police source told AFP. “His motives remain unknown at this stage.”

Several gunshots were heard around 1100 GMT in a busy area where they were several bars, restaurants and shops.

Resident Emmanuel Boujenan confirmed to AFP that the shooter who is a man was later arrested in a hair salon.

“There were people panicking, shouting to the police and pointing to the salon ‘he’s in there, he’s in there, go in’,” he explained.

The Paris prosecutor’s office announced that an investigative panel has been setup as “a man aged between 60 and 70 has been arrested and is in custody”.

“His identity is in the process of being checked,” it added.

Paris the French capital as experience several terrorist attacks since 2015. Other forms of attack like gang violence are also common the last years.
