The pioneer of miniskirts and hot pants, Dame Mary Quant has died at the age of 93.

The demise of the British fashion icon was announced by her family on Thursday, April 13, 2023.

Quant “died peacefully at home in Surrey, UK, this morning”, the family announced in a statement,

She was “one of the most internationally recognised fashion designers of the 20th century and an outstanding innovator”, according to the statement.

She became a historical figure for the creation of mini-skirts and generally made women’s clothes fun and inexpensive.

She played an undisputable role in turning the thigh-skimming super-short hemlines into an international trend albeit, whether she actually invented the iconic fashion item has been the subject of a long and bitter dispute with late French designer Andre Courreges, among others.

Well known much for her iconic bob hairstyle as for her designs, Quant also created hot pants, the skinny rib sweater, and waterproof mascara.

According to a fashion curator at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, Jenny Lister, the petite Quant’s personality and style made her “probably the most famous fashion designer that has come out of this country.

“She was in the right place at the right time and that was part of her success.”
